STAR Technology

Reclaiming and Recycling Coal Ash

Our proprietary beneficiation technology, STAR Technology, transforms coal ash from ponds, landfills, and production material into a consistent, high-quality product for the concrete industry and other industrial applications.

In continuous operation since 2008, STAR Technology is a self-sustaining exothermic process with no residual ash waste stream. Excavation and beneficiation with STAR Technology offers a permanent solution, as coal ash is eliminated.

The process provides a consistent, low LOI material that meets or exceeds all specifications for additives in concrete. STAR Technology is a commercially proven, sustainable solution to permanently remove coal ash from the environment.

STAR Plant Tour

Learn about the STAR Technology process in this tour of the Winyah STAR Plant in Georgetown, South Carolina.

The Winyah STAR Plant was the first facility in the world to process coal ash from on-site impoundments, as well as production ash. The Winyah STAR Facility was constructed at Santee Cooper’s Winyah Generating Station in less than nine months and became fully commercial on April 1, 2015.
